It's been almost a year since the last blog update (Dog Years, our live-action kids TV series, launched on Amazon). So what's been going on since then, I hear you cry?! It's been a busy spell of writing for kids TV, going to the Cannes Film Festival, as well as finalising post-production on Future TX, our sci-fi family film.
Future TX is about two kids who get their first mobile phones but they receive a call from someone who claims to be from the future, and he needs the kids' help if the world is going to survive! It's an action-packed comedy caper, with sci-fi twists and turns, and Griff Rhys Jones in a starring role! We had a lot of fun making this all the way back in the summer of 2018. Such is the nature of low budget filmmaking (and Covid set-backs), we've been in post-production ever since, slowly getting the all-important VFX and original music over the line. But it's all in the can now, and we had two cast & crew screenings (one in London last October, and the other in Bournemouth in February this year).
Tim Clague and I jetted off to the Cannes Film Festival in May, our first time since 2017. It was great to be back live with everyone along the Croisette, and we also had the added excitement of having Future TX on sale in the market section of the festival. We had some great meetings, and friendly cocktails, and we hope to have more news about the official release of Future TX soon.
While all of the Future TX activity was going on, I was Head Writing a new show for RTE called Flix. It's based on the book by Tomi Ungerer, a charming and winsome tale about a dog born to cat parents, and his life growing up in Cat Town! Naturally, I was very excited to be Head Writing such a fun new show; my first official Head Writing gig by myself (not counting Dog Years with Tim). Luckily, I had a great team to work with, and it's been an absolute blast getting the scripts into shape. It's due to launch on RTE (and ABC in Australia) in the New Year (2023) but there should be trailers/images/updates to share before then, so watch this space.
I also worked on a few new kids series, namely Silly Sundays for Cartoon Saloon, Big Tree City for Netflix (launching 1st August 2022), and Tulipop the amazingly adorable Icelandic animation. I feel very grateful to be able to write on such fantastic shows, and the animation format is both challenging and rewarding - and really useful to constantly fine tune your storytelling craft.
It's 19th of July as I type, in the middle of the blistering heatwave, and everything is still hotting up with work, what with Future TX yet to be released, the animation shows in production, and a new film that me and Tim have been hired on to direct in September (more on that when it's fully confirmed!). Phew, time for a cool drink...
